I really resonated with Michael Shepherd's address .... and it is fantastic that he has made available his email & other discussions for BC survivors for future contact.Hmmmm ... how on earth does adding a sentence to a form letter to Breastscreen attendees 'add any cost' at all - when they send a letter out to everyone anyway, usually just saying 'we take no responsibility for you getting breast cancer' (and unspoken - even tho [up til now] we won't tell you you are at heightened risk due to having dense breast tissue which mammograms mask any cancer growths?)There IS no added cost to the 'readers of the mammograms' - all they have to do is tick a box re Dense Breast tissue to be added to the 'letter' ..... and, to be honest, they SHOULD be scared of litigation into the future, due to failure to inform!

As you all know, BCNA is continuing to raise awareness of breast cancer risks in women with dense breasts. Hi folk, I am Mike Shephard, husband of Jean (JeanBean on this forum). It's fair to say that we were quite peed off at not being informed about breast density and we are now advocates for change to that policy. It was great to meet some of you at the Adelaide workshop where I presented a paper 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell - the breast density secret that changed our lives (but not in a good way)' - available on the INFORMD website. We were very grateful for the opportunity to do that - so thanks to INFORMD and BCNA. Will also be presenting at the Melbourne conference on 10 October from the patient viewpoint. Re Jean's pain @Mikey - have you been able to enquire about the use of medicinal Cannabis Oil to hopefully help control it? It IS apparently available, but needs lots of hoops jumped thru before you are allowed to use it :(
Check out this post - there is a great Documentary on it's use in Australia - that helped it being grown commercially for medicinal use

Re cost of Melbourne workshop - the INFORMD website says $300 (after Sept 10) for clinicians etc, and $50 for members of a recognised consumer group. Would the BCNA be a recognised consumer group? Would forum members be recognised as members of BCNA? I will ask the question and post again when I have the answer.

Thanks for your words of encouragement kmakm. I notice that on my post on this thread our email address got zapped (probably BCNA administrator policy). However, it is on the back of our paper on the Informd website. Jean thanks members for their concern. She is going fine except for the bone and joint pain probably caused by the Femara. She is exploring pain management options.

Wonderful to see you here, @Mikey and well done on taking the stance you have for you & Jean.

Like you & Jean, I was also peeved at not being advised about my dense breast tissue! If my GP hadn't picked it up (she had VERY sensitive fingertips!) my tumours would have been growing bigger every day for who knows how long, as the 'accepted methods have proved useless.

Keep up the good work!! I hope Jean is going OK xx

See who is running it in Melbourne and talk to them - maybe they can be enlightened and see the benefit of having consumers present as they did in Adelaide.BCNA might be willing to back that move too @Giovanna_BCNA
