Break from tamoxifen which may become permanent

In 2012 I had lumpectomy, chemo and radio for hormone positive cancer. Then my onc put me on Aromasin which gave me a lot of pain. Then I tried Arimidex with the same result. I had about 6 months on each. Next was tamoxifen. I coped much better with it, but about 3 years ago my hair started falling out. My onc said it may not grow back. I tried a drug treatment but it didn’t help.

About 4 months ago, I started losing more hair more quickly. I was then about 7 years into treatment, having been aiming for 10. So we decided I would have a 3 month break and go back to see her. My hair almost immediately stopped falling out. So now I am wondering about trying an AI again. Has anyone else been in this situation?

  • Been taking Tamoxifin for last 20 months and having lots of hair loss and bouts of depression. Dr wants me to keep going at this stage but I intend to have the conversation with him about a ’break’.
  • After two years on Tamoxifen my oncologist said I could stop because it did it’s heavy lifting in its first two years.  Everybody’s case is different. After a year off Tamoxifen finally my nails are nearly back to normal after breaking often while I was on Tamoxifen. I didn’t notice changes to my hair.  But my scalp is now oilier.
