Bone density test

Hi,

My GP has suggested that I get a bone density test (BMD study) due to being on Tamoxifen.

Wondering if anyone can tell me what this involves?  I'm hoping it is not to do with having something injected into veins as my veins are shot and it is really traumatic when they try and do this.

Thanks,
Julia

  • I didn't pay as my oncologist said it she was checking for low vitamin d levels, and that's free how stupid is that ,but not free for bc, how does that figure Mine showed osteopenia in the spine and hips. Adean
  • No cause I'm past menopause,so if anything,tamoxifen helps my bones!!Perhaps hereditary,but not sure.I am seeing a specialist in May.Cheers Robyn
  • Really sorry to hear that Robyn, but as you say good to know.  Do doctors think its is from Tamoxifen use?

I have made an appointment for a test on 20/5.

  • I paid 150 and you can claim some, but I haven't got around to doing it yet.I got my results a couple of weeks ago and they weren't good.I have osteoporosis, quite severely in my spine. At least I know about it though,so I can manage it as best as I can.Cheers Robyn
  • Thanks Robyn,

That sound good.  Have you got results back yet?  Did you have to pay for it or does medicare?

  • Julia I had a bone density test 4 weeks ago.It involves laying on your back,fully clothed,and then they take a sort of x ray I guess.5 minutes maximum,no pain,no nothing!!Too easy.Robyn
