Beginning this journey

I was rather rudely told on 25th October by the dr at the radiologist "you felt the lump, you know what it is you will need a biopsy to determine what type of cancer " um gee thanks for the compassion. My Gp was at least sympathetic but a friend who is a Gp and is 1 yr out from her treatment was amazing and had me booked into a surgeon on the 29th October. I had a lumpectomy 3 days later followed by a reexcision and port installed a week later. Fortunately no evidence of cancer in lymph nodes or on any further scans. My cancer was stage 2 grade 3 DCIS. This has all happened so fast I really didn't have much time to ponder the consequences until Monday when I had my 1st chemo treatment, I had a meltdown on the way because now this is real and the visible signs are coming. But I'm trying to take my own advise and suck it up princess. I'm feeling pretty good 2 days out from treatment had a superwoman day yesterday now I know why athletes take steroids ! Just hoping I don't crash and burn later in the week.

  • My cheeks are always red the first few days.Like Deanne says, use Moo Goo.I have one cycle to go,and no matter how much Moo Goo I use,the skin on my face is just flaking off, similar to what happens after a sunburn.Cheers Robyn.
  • Yes the flushed look usually goes away after the steriods get out of the system. Make sure you use a good moisturizer as your skin gets very dry. I used Moo Goo as it is a natural product available from most Chemists. Good idea to monitor your temp as well. Deanne xx
  • The steroids made my appetite ravenous, I am now trying to eat healthier snacks. I had those superwoman moments, followed by the 'crash', Robyn and Deanne are right, rest when you need to, things can change hourly, one minute your'e up and one minute things get shaky, Best wishes and take care,

  • So sorry that you are finding yourself in this situation but you have come to the right place for support. The speed that everything happens at the beginning is good in that we all want the cancer gone as quickly as possible, but it does not give us time to adjust to the shock. I found that it was not until I started chemo that my mind caught up with what was happening. You probably will feel tired when the steriods wear off, most people do. I had 3 rounds of FEC chemo at 3 weekly intervals. By about day 5 or 6 I would start to return to normal and always felt good before the next dose. I then had 3 lots of Docetaxel which was different and did not agree with my body at all, but some people find it better than FEC. If you find you are having any trouble with side effects just ask on here and you will probably find lots of helpful advice on what others have done to get through. Doctors and nurses are great but unless they have been through this themselves they cannot really understand. Even then we are all different so the more people you talk with the more likely you are to find common ground. Wishing you all the best. Take care and rest up when you need to. Deanne xxx
