Appointment cancelled for biopsy results

Last week, I had my 1 yr ultrasound and mammogram of my right breast after a year of surgery, chemo  and targetted treatment following my left mastectomy for IDC cancer in Jan 2014.

The radiologist identified a nodule 0.7cm in my right breast that had not shown up in my ultrasound last year and recommended a biopsy. .My surgeon sent me for a biopsy, but said that since he is away until 23rd Jan, he would arrange for the results to go to my GP.

Radiology biopsied it on Thursday, and told me the results will be through in 2 working days. I made an appointment with my GP for Tuesday afternoon.

I then did the maths and realised it might be through this afternoon, ie Monday. The radiology clinic confirmed that results would be available by late afternoon, but it might not be rung through until Tuesday morning. So I made an appointment with my GP for Monday at 5.15pm and explained she may have to ring to get the results.

Next I got a phone call cancelling my 5.15 Monday appointment, saying that these results take weeks at the moment so no point in keeping the appointment. I repeated that I had been assured the results would be available by the late afternoon, and that I needed to know because I would like to be able to  sleep tonight, want to know if I am about to start another year of cancer treatment or not. That I also had insurance forms to fill in and if the results were not ready, we could do that in the time so it would not be wasted. She said she'd talk to the doctor and it should be ok.

Then I got another call saying that they definitely did have to cancel my appointment, but agreed that if the results did come through I would be "looked after."

At 4pm, I rang radiology, who gave me the number of the pathology company. I rang them, and they had my results and said they would ring them  through to my GP straight away. I rang the med centre  again and they said they thought the GP had already left, and that I would just have to wait till Tuesday for my results. I said they could not do that to me, that I had to have them today,  from the nurse if the GP was unavailable.  She said she talk to the GP and see what could be done.

At 4.40 I rang back and the receptionist said that the nurse would call me back, but is very busy and has 4 people to see before me.

So now I am waiting, and hoping she will bother to ring, and won't leave me till tomorrow. I don't feel at all confident that they will look after me.

I trusted my GP. Now I don't. I feel really let down by her.

  • Hi Jessica. That is absolutely shocking! I am stunned, after what you had said previously about your GP. Have you managed to get the results yet? My prayers and good wishes are with you, hoping for a good result. Take care, Lynne x
