Any food DOs and DON'Ts for heartburn?

hi. I have been suffering terrible pain from heartburn in the first few days of week 2 after my 1st chemo (FEC). I've done some googgling but haven't found anything very useful.

Most info is about medicines for controlling it (I am taking Nexium in the morning). The community nurse said my system would be acidic and to have a yacult every day.

What is the opposite? or am I over thinking this. Would eating yoghurt help? what about suppliments? Everything else I have read talks in generalities of eating healthily, blah blah blah.

Or are there things that I should definately avoid and things that I just have to learn by bitter experience that set me off?

Any advice is welcome.

Kathleen

Yes, I get those odd pains across the chest and assume it is adhesions from my surgery settling down.

I don't know how to take it easy, especially over the Christmas period when I desperately wanted to visit my mum who has untreatable ovarian cancer and drove 14 hours to the mid-North coast from Canberra (car trouble made the trip longer). My darling daughter did most of the driving.

I haven't had any more attacks like the one on Christmas day again thank goodness. I find that these days that food isn't interesting me very much but I do suddenly get VERY hungry and get the shakes. I might get my sugar checked. I am now carrying fruit and a muesli bar around with me as well as lots of water. I love ginger nuts and will get some.

all will be good - I have faith in the univers looking after me :) and thank you for the compliment on my pic. :)

  • Hi Kathleen,

I bought some ginger biscuits, cheap ones etc.  Eat what  you feel like; listen to your body and what it needs. Sounds good advice as does alkaline and seasonal foods. I love my greek yoghurt and have taken pro biotics. What about peppermints?

I get pain/ discomfort in middle of chest and down left arm, intermittently. I had menopause from treatments at 42; now 56. Only in last couple of years have the pain, especially if I exert mysel;  so  try not to.  But I need to walk etc..so it is a balancing act..  I am good at " pottering " these days..LOL. I wonder if it might be some sort of heartburn.. or even lymph movement through the chest/ abdominal area after radiation to both sides of chest.

I found I take some time, years even, for physical  things to settle down after surgery, treatments, radiation; let alone emotional stuff. Do not fight it. You can always start up again later, for now.. Take it easy.. is my advice.

I did get checked for heart which was ok. Maybe eat smaller meals, more frequently, rather than bigger ones?

    Good luck, Kathy.

P.S. Like the new look !

  • Hi hope the heartburn has improved. I have had since going through change of life this problem and understand how uncomfortable it is. A couple of foods to keep away from are chocolate coffee and orange juice.

All the best with your journey.

  • Heartburn was the pits ! I took Somac (similar to Nexium) as a prophylactic but I also used Slippery Elm tablets - still do. It's excellent for indigestion/heartburn.

I also founf that eating small amounts more often was a better option and def the blander the better. Not thatI wanted to eat much of anything for about 10 days each cycle, I lived on small tins of spaghetti !

Chewing small pieces of apple slowly is also good - cut it into slivers (skin and all) and then chew for as long as it will last in your mouth.

Just keep telling yourself it will be over soon.

  • When I had similar probs during chemo my GP told me to eat what I like ...just be sure you eat !! I had to take Nexium for the months I had chemo & then I also took Pariet the week I had chemo. I lived on bland food like porridge , semolina & baked beans on steamed potatoes. I also couldn't drink water so had lots of cold milo. Even now 12months after finishing chemo I still find I dehydrate really fast if I'm not careful so always carry water with me.
