After treatment

Hi everyone! I finished chemo on June 20th, surgery on July 19th and radiation on October 18th of this year. I am now on Letrozole as I am we'll into the post menopausal stage. I have not had the opportunity to have children (one of many issues with my ex husband, of whom I separated from in August last year). I am grateful that we are still friends as he took me to my chemo treatments and to hospital on the day of surgery. I am also great full that I have a great bunch of workmates who have cheered me up when I'm down. I still have some down days. I walk into the workshop every morning and make a point of saying good morning to every single person in there. I was questioned by one of them last week as to why I say good morning to everyone. My response was "why not?" I also added "I am happy if I can make someone else smile, if only for a few minutes". I handed out some home made Christmas star decorations with chocolates in them to everyone as well yesterday as a sign of appreciation and also because I wanted to :-) It has been a hard year dealing with breast cancer on my own, but I have stayed reasonably positive through it all and kept smiling. I have learnt a lot this year about myself and how strong I truly am, both mentally and physically. Take the time and believe in yourself. I know the journey is scary, especially when you don't know what is going to happen, but live each day to the fullest, don't dwell on the past. You can't change it. Life has a way of teaching us lessons we didn't necessarily want to learn, and giving us tests we never planned to take. When the end of the journey seems impossible to reach, remember that all you need to do is take one more step. Stay focused on your goal and remember, each small step will bring you a little closer. When the road becomes hard to travel and it feels as if you'll never reach the end, look deep inside your heart and you will find strength that you never knew you had. I certainly did! I am planning on doing a sea change either next year or the year after. If I can handle breast cancer on my own, the world is my oyster! Who wants to join me? :-) Sami xxxxx

  • It's really nice when you reach a place in this journey that you can reflect on the positives that have come along the way and I am getting there I think. I know that when we are at the low points though it is really hard to stay position and focus on the light at the end of the tunnel. But it's wonderful ladies like you that can give us hope and put smiles on our faces. So thank you for your post. You have urged me on to keep taking one more step. Enjoy your Christmas Sami and have a happy, healthy New Year. Love Janey xxx

  • How beautifully written your blog post is:)I especially like"don't dwell on the past, you can't change it". I am sorry that you and your husband separated.but it is great that you remain friends.I think it would be very hard to face cancer alone, and I admire your strength and especially your positive outlook. All the best for your sea change:) We came from the south coast of NSW,and are actually thinking of going back there.I miss it,and life is too short to be doing things you really don't want to be doing.Take care of yourself. Love from. Robyn.xoxo
