advice please

Hi all . well as you know i was told i had the BRCA1 gene in december last years and that my 2007 cancer was a tn one . well i have been trying to do what the oncologist genetisist said and arranging a medical support team if i choose to not have a bilateral mastectomy .and get advice from them re percentages of return and my best options ???? my gp just sort of shrugged it off and said just continue with the yrly mammo and ultrasound should be enough . hmmmmm , then i had my yearly mmo and u/s and oh boy did i freak out had three large lumps two in my bc boob on in the other , all around the 3cm size my original cancer lump was 2.5cm on finding but doubled in a couple of weeks when it was finally removed in my partial mastectomy . so i did freak abit they decided to try fine needle asperation first to see if cysts and all collapsed the largest on 3cm was full of a really milky liquid  the nurse wanted to send it for testing but the doctor said wasnt needed ?? i mentioned my history and she said its not an issue . so i just left it . i dont know how to cope with all this its as though they think brca1 and tn is nothing new just a breast cancer diagnosis but the nurses are different is it me am i worrying more than i need to? i know i am now almost 8 yrs after my first diagnosis but i dont wont to risk another if i can help it. . i see my specialist surgeon on friday 27th and hope he can explain more to me but the doctors dont seem to take it serious . is it or am i wrong? is the genetisist  onc wrong?  what should i ask my surgeon pls help what extra screening should i ask for . do i need a scan or bone scan or what else can i do , are there medications no one tells me anything . look forward to a few replies i normally just go with the flow but when no one says much it tends to worry me a little,

  • Hi Fran,

I don't have either BRCA1 or 2 gene mutation but a strong family history of breast cancer. The genetics counsellor I saw said that although I was negatvie the strong family history meant that screening for women in my family was important and suggested checkups via a breast surgeon if they felt the GP wasn't enough. Sounds like your appointment with the surgeon is on the right path but if you are still worried it might pay to speak to the genetics counsellor again for further advice on what testing is recommended for you.

    Best wishes
