I don't have either BRCA1 or 2 gene mutation but a strong family history of breast cancer. The genetics counsellor I saw said that although I was negatvie the strong family history meant that screening for women in my family was important and suggested checkups via a breast surgeon if they felt the GP wasn't enough. Sounds like your appointment with the surgeon is on the right path but if you are still worried it might pay to speak to the genetics counsellor again for further advice on what testing is recommended for you.
