  •  Sorry about your mum. I had Dr Gourlay in Newcastle . I was very happy with him, but I have heard so many good things about Dr David Clark. From what I have been told he is the best in Newcastle. Such a lovely person. I have since moved to Port , but would go back to Newcastle if anything happened again with braest cancer and see Dr Clark first choice then Dr Gourlay. Hope this helps.

    Take care

  • It's a world wind when you get diagnosed!  An excellent surgeon here is Dr Guy Hingston. I went to him and have never heard a bad comment against him. If your mum is having a lumpectomy she will heal quite quickly. The hospital at Port has a motel that you can stay at. Ring NCCI on 65 80 1807 for infomation about the motel. Dr Hingston has a webstie that you can google. Good luck with your Mum's journey. Take each day and each test one day at a time.

  • Hi Cm,

I am sorry to hear about your mum.

I just wanted to let you know that Dr David Clark at the Breast and Endocrine centre in Gateshead(Newcastle) is absolutely fantastic. He is kind and caring and has a lovely manner.

I was diagnosed Dec 2013 and I saw him as I have the BRCA 2 gene and was referred to him.

Prior to receiving my results I had already made the decision to see him if I did test positive to the gene as my aunties and close family friends have all seen him and love him! He is highly regarded in his profession within the Newcastle area. Everyone I spoke to said he is the best.

The nurses and staff are all lovely. I got in to him fairly quickly and was operated on the following week.

I am thinking about you mum and yourself.

    I hope this helps.

    Take Care

  • Dear CM

I am sorry to hear of your mother's diagnosis. It is a scary time and there is a lot to think about - it is good you are there to help her.

There is a peak body for breast surgeons called the Breast Surgeons of Australia and New Zealand (BreastSurgANZ). On their website they have a 'find a surgeon' link, where you put in the state/territory where you live and it brings up a list of specialist breast surgeons in your area. These are all surgeons who are members of BreastSurgANZ and who participate in an audit where they report their breast cancer surgery outcomes. I'd highly recommend you have a look at this list so that you know your mother is being cared for by someone who specialises in breast cancer surgery.

There is more information about BreastSurgANZ and their audit on the Surgery page of our website.

If your mother hasn't received a copy of BCNA's My Journey Kit you may like to order it for her. It has lots of helpful information and will be useful for you as well as your mother.

If there is any information we can help you with, please call us on 1800 500 258.

    Best wishes

    Kathy (BCNA's Policy Team)

  • Hi Cm

Sounds like a very hectic time for you and your mum. So much to think about - it can become quite scary. But you are not alone, that's for sure.

As Paula has suggested, a breast care nurse is a wonderful source of local information and ongoing support so check who is available in your area. I'm from a regional area where my bc nurse works really closely with a team of professionals treating bc patients at a public hospital but she's available to private hospital patients, too.

Initially I chose my surgeon based on his surgical experience, longstanding reputation, communication skills ( especially listening to me!) and followup care he offered. He explained things clearly about my diagnosis and my treatment choices (especially risks and recovery time frames) - so I felt like I had choices and could make my decisions confidently( without being rushed or pressured). Consequently I trusted him - to do his best for me and manage any problems along the way. This point was very important for me.

Has your mum received the My Journey Kit yet? If not, it's available through BCNA - phone 1800 500 258 It will be another great source of information, practical tips and comforting reassurance - for both of you.

Everyone's bc journey is different so please encourage your mum to keep asking questions and tell you what she needs - and if she's worried about things, keep reaching out for answers that help and make sense to her .

Take good care of yourself, too.

Hope you keep us posted on how things progress.

  • So sorry your Mum is faced with a BC diagnosis. She is lucky to have a caring daughter like you looking out for her. Does your Mum have a breast care nurse? I was given the number of mine from the place where I had my mammogram. They are a wealth of information. Your GP should also have the name of local breast surgeons. Sending you and your Mum a big cyber hug. I thing you can google McGrath breast care nurses. Best wishes. Paula
