Advice needed starting chemo 27/8

Hi everyone, I have my first chemo session on Thursday . I was hoping for some advice regarding how I should prepare , what should I take me and any tips for post round 1 chemo would be much appreciated. I have 8 rounds - more surgery then 4 weeks radiotherapy.

  • Hi Locksley, gosh you are having a long chemo protocol. I have 8 rounds - went well - wasn’t expecting to be nauseous and then I got a migraine but good today .Sending you lots of hugs for your journey xxx
  • Hi @Mummy0297 hope all went as best as it could for your first chemo session yesterday.   I started my next session of chemo yesterday.  I am now up to having chemo weekly for 12 weeks.   Sending hugs xxx
  • So far as side effects, they seem extremely variable from person to person.
Take someone with you first time, if allowed. Ask if it is possible. COVID started when my Chemo started, and support people weren't allowed, for all of my Chemo. Each State and hospital will have different policies.
Having the things available that have been suggested above, is good advice. If you need Nexium, get it on a script, it's cheaper.
You haven't said much about the specific chemo planned. Or much of your life situation.
You may have Income Protection insurance, in your Superannuation, if currently working. This may be helpful. If you are going to take a large amount of time off work.
But hopefully you will have been told which side effects are likely. They can be bad for some people and relatively minor for others, so try to stay optimistic. Mine have all been very manageable.
I had 4 fortnightly EC (Epirubicin+ Cyclophosphamide), then 12 weekly Paclitaxel. Just finished and feeling tired, but I am OK. I start radiotherapy in a week for 5 weeks.
Have you considered the cold cap, to possibly save your hair? You would need to start it on your first treatment, or it's too late to start. There are other posts re cold cap for more information.
You could buy a wig in advance.
You could cook some easy meals that freeze well, in advance. For days you don't feel up to cooking.
I always took a book to chemo. But usually slept most of the time. They have TV there.
Good luck, and I hope that your treatments go as well as possible.

  • I found heart burn really made me miserable - I got onto nexium and took it until my 5 months were up. It was a lifesaver. And Coloxyl for the constipation. And just remember it will end one day -😊
  • Take something to do that you enjoy, knitting, crosswords etc, take some music and something to munch on. For preparation for once you get home, have on hand, heartburn tablets, gastro stop, constipation unblockers, panadol. You may not need any of them, but be prepared so you are not awake all night. I actually am a crazy person so I spent most of my chemo time chatting to everyone else who were having treatment.
