Aching legs/Radiotherapy

Hi all

Hope you are travelling well !!

I finished my last chemo just over 3 weeks ago now - cyclophosomide, doxytaxel and continuing with herceptin.

I am really struggling with aching legs and sometimes body. this wasn't too much of a problem for me during chemo but seems to have really gotten worse!!

Especially towards the end of the day  find it really difficult!

Has anyone else had this and more importantly how long will it last!

I am off to start 5 weeks radiation treatment tomorrow - all tips gratefully received!!

Thanks so much

  • HI Leonie

    Thanks for your reply.

I haven't started any hormone treatment yet - the oncologist said to wait until after radiotherapy is finished - but I feel as you described - I am also finding by night time I am at my worst - I feel like I have aged 10 fold at the moment. Interesting how the nurses and Drs differ isnt it - the nurses are actually seeing the patients more often overall though I think!!

6 months sounds like a long time but it is certainly better than forever for sure!!

I am glad you are feeling better after a break from the arimidrex though - perhaps there is a link with that also. Did they put you on any bone strengthening meds at the same time ? My oncologist has recommended one for me - although seems to have its own delightful side effects - jaw necrosis being one of them !!!

I too have calcium supplements etc but have been a bit hopeless in remembering to take them. Life feels full - with all the ongoing treatment and I have 2 daughters at school etc -  so many things to remember!!

Was just saying to someone the other day that even though I have been very real in this road so far - there are times when I still cant believe I'm on it. Not exactly what I thought I'd be doing at 41.

Well thanks again for taking the time to reply - I really hope that your aches and pains settle down too and you get some relief !!

I bought some new wedge summer sandals the other day - don't know what I was thinking - I'll be in agony after walking in those for more than half an hour!! hehe xx

    Take care

  • I was on the same "potion" of chemo as yourself.  I finished cheo on 9th June and commenced taking Arimidex on 6th July.  From 11 July I have been in agony with pain in my legs, arms and hands.  I have, in conjunction with my GP, MO and surgeon tryig to rule out the "culprit".  No one is sayig what it is caused by.  I stopped taking the Arimidex on 16th August and will be off it for another 2 weeks.  I was beginning to think that it really was the Arimidex as today I was able to feel "normal" for a couple of hours.  However from reading your blog I am back to "square one".  My MO won't have a "bar of it" being the chemo however on speaking with oncology nurses they informed me that this is how some patients are affected by chemo completion.  It can last up to 6 months.  I take calcium and Vit D supplements and also fish oil when I remember.  It is pure agony by night time.  This week I am going to try acupuncture.   So I don't know what is causing my pain - have had bone testing and scans and all is good.  The oncology nurse did say that it is the marrow tryig to be replenished in the bones.  Whatever it is it sure is painful.  I hope this information "helps" XLeonie
