A question about Overseas travel

Hi

I am hoping someone can help me.  As part of my surgery in 2007 I had 20 something lypmh nodes removed.  We are about to head overseas for the first time and need some advice.

I have not been affected by Lymphodeama and want to keep it that way but understand that air travel can cause a problem.

Any ideas what I need to do to keep it away?

Thanks for your help

  • I've just returned home after a Xmas holiday break.  All up travelled on five flights in a two week time period the longest being 5 hours.  Whilst we were away I did experience a bad case of "kanckles" but I am unsure of whether this was as a result of a high rate of humidity over in Fiji or a bit of lymphodema, or a combination of both.  We made a point of purchasing seats with extra leg room wherever possible so I could keep stretching my legs out and moving them around.  Have been back home for 10 days now and all seems to have settled down nicely.  I think I will get myself some of those compression socks for use next time I fly though!

  • Hi

I had 13 lymph nodes removed and fly frequently overseas with no compression bandage and no problems.  The first time was  2 months after finishing chemo and 2 weeks after finishing radiation. The longest flight I have taken is 14 hours. Doctors have different opinions on this, Professor Graham from St George Private hospital wrote a research paper on it. I think people with lymphodema are supposed to get the sleeves specially fitted. I try to fly Premium Economy when I go overseas ( when they have specials) and also get an aisle seat and make sure you move around a lot.

  • I went to bali no problems but wore compression stockings and sleeve, and got up and down and did exercises but blew up when I flew to Sydney didn't wear them and I suffered, they obviously helped. Regards adean
  • I actually have lymphedema which developed after my recurrence. At the time I was flying from cairns to Brisbane every 3 weeks for chemo. I was just wondering if it would be worth your while getting an off the shelf compression garment to wear during the long haul flights? Do you have access to an oncology trained occupational therapist who could measure you for one. Just a thought as I am a bit paranoid re lymphedema. Have a great trip. Paula :)
