A part of this journey is done

Hi ..

Well last Thursday went as well as could be planned. I had the mapping done on the Wednesday arvo.. (oh my god) the hook wire was put on Thursday morning. More needles in the boob... then I walked across the road to the Hospital to a waiting Dr and Theatre staff.

I headed into the OT at 10am and then after that all I know is I was coming out of Recovery to the ward around 6pm.  Apparently at the 4hr operation mark the Dr got a call from the Pathologist whom she had brought over from Westmead to biopsy the Sentinel Node before she closed me up but when she got the call to say it was Ca. positive she went back in and took out all the Axilla nodes .. so a total clearance done. BUGGER. This took another 2 hrs .. so I had a total of 6hr under. Apparently there were quite a few choice words used when she got the news cos she was so upset for me ... all the reports and ultrasounds had come back as Clear in the nodes.

I have to say Dr Saliba is just awesome... I now have perky new boobs. Ive gone from a DD to maybe a C cup .. (cant tell you how long that has been.. not sure ive ever owned a C cup bra)

I have come home with a drain insitu and is still draining out ... but should be good to come out next Thursday when I see her again for the pathology report and then I will get a better idea of what actually happened and where I will be going from there. Chemo and now been mentioned and definitely Radiotherapy but bring on Thursday for more info.

Pain is pretty good in the Right Boob but the Left is giving me a little bit of grief because of the numb feeling under the arm and in the left upper arm. There is a nerve or tendon that is giving me hell and keeps tightening up so I have to try and move my arm withouth lifting it above my head to release it.... there is a little burning as well but that eases off. Sleeping is a pain cos I'm a side sleeper and now I have to sleep on my back.. so I tuck pillows underneath me and that stops me rolling. The drain is the worst tho... it has been blocked twice and being a nurse I have been able to unblock it to take the pressure off and allow it to flow again.

Well, this is where I am at, at this time... I get to go out of the house for a little while to do stuff then come home buggered and need to rest. I cant drive at the moment until I see her next week.. but hope to back at work on the 15th August...

  • thanks..

fortunately,, starting back at work next Monday should be ok.. as I am a Clinical Facilitator it is not "heavy" work. I will have students doing Community Mental Health and will be able to work around them.. easy..

  • Yeah it was a bummer,,, I remember waking up and asking .. 'Sentinel Node"  and was told it is involved... damn...

  • Glad you have all that behind you.

Wishing you a speedy recovery but don't be in a rush to get back to work. Your body will need lots of rest.

  • Lucky you were able to have the clearance done whilst there and didn't  need a second op. It's  hard work recovering though...amazing how tired you get. You are doing fantastic. Kath x

  • Sorry to hear that you needed to have the full clearance done :( Glad to hear you're feeling good and positive. Look after yourself and don't push yourself too much xx
