Interestingly, the nurse at the radiation clinic I attended said there's a serious shortage of research into what works best as a skin treatment. They used to recommend sorbelene but have found better results with a brand of paw paw ointment that includes calendular. They also sell the 'moo goo' range. The difficulty with research in this area is setting up a control group. We all react so differently to skin treatments and I think you are wise to do a skin test.
My preference will always be for something with the least number of ingredients. I also try to avoid anything tested on animals (most leading brands) and anything with known carcinogens or suspected carcinogens (like parabens, sodium laurel sulphate and parfum - and that's just the start of a long list).
It still astounds me that it's okay to include carcinogens in skin products.
