6 month mammogram results: show tumour has returned

My current treatment is Tamoxifen, Zometta and Zoladex and 6 monthly mammograms.

Two weeks ago, I had my first mammogram after my surgery; radiologist was concerned with my mammogram and recommended that I have biopsy. My Breast Surgeon wasn’t too concerned and said it was not likely to be a tumour and more likely to be a scare tissue. After undergoing my biopsy, much to my disbelief I found out it was a tumour. This Wednesday, is a BIG day for me, the day I find out whether or not the treatment I am currently on is working sufficiently. Surgeon suggests that my current treatment may be working for my BONES but it defiantly did not seem to work for my breast. I am praying and hoping that the BONES have stayed the same and that it has not spread anywhere else.

Has anyone else experienced a similar situation?

I’m nervous about getting my results. I would ideal like to stay on the same treatment – knowing it works and have surgery to remove the tumour and have radiation therapy to the breast as I have my wedding in the next 5 months.

I feel really good, and have very minimal pain in the current areas of my bones.

I have started having a vegetable juice every morning to increase Vitamins and Minerals intake.

Any thoughts, advice or just a supportive line would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi Miss V

Hope the new treatment plans works out OK for you.  It's so devastating to find out the treatment you were on isn't working, especially if there are no outward signs and you are feeling OK.

I'd be interested to know what the chemo tablet you are having is as well.  Chemo will be the next option for me if it turns out the the Femara isn't working.

Good to hear that the cancer has stayed in the bones and not spread to any organs.

  • Hi missv

Sorry that your news wasn't better, we all get these kicks in the guts with this disease from time to time, however it's great that you are on oral chemotherapy. What are you on? Xeloda? Are you going to keep having Zometa to support your bones, or just the chemo at the moment?

Bone mets can be controlled with chemo and/or a bisphosphonate and pain can be reduced or even completely eliminated by radiotherapy. There is a new bone support monthly injection called Xgeva.

    With love,

  •  I had a CT Scan and Bone Scan, and found out that my treatment (hormone therapy) was not effective and that the cancer and 'eating' away at my bones. I haven't had much pain, which makes it hard to believe that this is happening. No in any of the vital organs, however, the found a lymph node near my neck that was larger, but it was not cancerous.

I started Chemo today, on the chemo tablets, till the wedding (hopefully) which is in 5 months.  I keep praying that the chemo will fight it and kill it or make it manageable.

Any tips or advice would be appericated. x

  • Hi Miss V

I had to change from Tamoxifen to Femara about 2 and 1/2 months ago.  See the oncologist on 1 November so will hopefully get an idea if the Femara is working.  My tumour markers were down after 6 weeks on Femara so I'm hoping that was a good sign.

    Good luck with your results.
