Yes, cutting it very short saves a lot of grief especially with long hair. I didn't shave, but that's another option. I had a mastectomy no reconstruction and use a prosthesis, for a number of reasons I wasn't keen to have more surgery. 5 years on I am fine with that decision, but there are other options.
