Depression,PTSD and BC
Hi all, this forum has been invaluable to me since my diagnosis on May 26 this year. Had lumpectomy ,left breast, including loss of nipple, clear margins, nodes all clear. Yay! Stage 1, grade 3.About to start chemo, TC, on Thursday.
Have lots of support too, I am very fortunate.
I feel as prepared as I can be.....everyone on here’s advice etc. and lots of my own research.
I have had clinically diagnosed major depression for about 20 years and then added PTSD from an incident about 12 years ago. Now BC.
My gp has explained that often people with mental health issues cope very differently with physical illness. Because I can see what’s wrong and actually do something about it, meaning surgery , chemo etc, I can deal with it.
who would’ve thought I’d be saying yay for depression!?
Anyway, I was at first, very upbeat, not scared, sleeping fine.....here comes the rant......post surgery now , I hate the way I look, I am terrified of starting chemo and don’t want to get out of bed.
Yes, I have counselling all booked in and my gp is seeing me fortnightly.
I have so much to be grateful for, and I am.
Anyone able to share their mix of Mental health and BC?
Hoping I’m not alone.
Best wishes to all.xxx

- Kiwi_AngelMember@Sister it’s good u got an appointment but I agree - good think u weren’t suicidal! I made my first appointment the earliest I could when I could do it and she had a free spot and her receptionist rang me to say they had an earlier one and then the shrink herself rang me too at another time to say there was an earlier one. I had to keep telling them I was ok and not about to take myself out.
- SisterMemberAnother discussion brought this one back to mind and I thought I should mention that on Tuesday, I finally got a call back about a psychologist's appointment with the rehabilitation mob that I got the mental health care plan for. Five weeks later!! Too bad if I was suicidal or anything. I do understand that they were short-staffed but what annoys me is that during that time, no-one ever rang me to say that they were still working on getting me in, or suggested a referral to someone else. Basic customer service 101! I am seeing someone else, now - I have three appointments provided by Country Fire Service and then the mental health care plan will take over - and her office organised for my plan to be changed to reflect the change when another recommended psychologist's office insisted that I would have to go back to the GP. The thing is, I just don't have the emotional reserves to deal with shit like this - one of the reasons I need the psych! Thank goodness for the CFS! This is just a rant - I'm slowly getting my equilibrium back.
- Beryl_C_MemberSometimes an intervention comes from the most unexpected source. My radiation treatment is going well, staff very kind and gentle, no real problems with my skin. The treatment room always has music and its my habit to visualise images from the words or what the melody invokes. Yesterday, as the staff left the room, and I tried to relax and get into the 'zone', I heard ACDC 'Highway to Hell'. No, I didn't visualise that one but felt like giggling, it was so incongruous. Small moments ....
- Kiwi_AngelMember@Vangirl I just bought it. I’ll give it a go.
- Kiwi_AngelMember@Vangirl I’m old school and love an actual book. I think I saw it on booktopia for $8.
- kmakmMember@"Kiwi Angel" Not yet, but I will. I've downloaded it. K xox
- VangirlMember@"Kiwi Angel" purchased for seven dollars something on Kindle.
- Kiwi_AngelMember@kmakm did u read it?
- VangirlMember@"Kiwi Angel" I have read the introduction and I will definitely be looking into buying it.
Apart from the insights into my own situation I am also interested to know more about his personal story - about the son with autism, as I have a nine year old nephew with autism. - Kiwi_AngelMember@kmakm I think u should - I think the introduction will resonate with u too.
@Vangirl I might have to buy this book.
