As a 34-year police veteran here in the U.S. (28 years with the San Diego Police Department, the last six, 1994-2000, as Seattle's police chief), I applaud Meg McGowan's wisdom, courage, and resolve. Inspired by a heartbreaking diagnosis as well as concern for others, including her own daughter, she painstakingly researched cannabis, and its demonstrated and potential benefits in the medical field. What she learned appears to have reinforced her belief that not only has the U.S.-led global "War on Drugs" caused far more harm than good, it has undermined scientific inquiry into the palliative properties of cannabis, along with curative possibilities in treating certain cancers.
Coming from a former NSW Police Superintendant, Ms. McGowan's article ought to be required reading for every law enforcement official and politician in your country and in mine.
On a personal note, I thank the author for her bravery and wish her every comfort in her heroic battle. She's an inspiration!
