DCIS low grade

Hi everyone I’m 37 and was recently diagnosed with DCIs after first being told it was atypical ductal
hyperplasia from the initial biopsy. I have a meeting with surgeon next week but the lesion has already been removed and he told me it has clear margins. I have three children. Whilst I understand this is very early im concerned about whether there is cancer elsewhere and was wondering if anyone had petscan being diagnosed at this stage as I really feel like I want to check there is nothing anywhere else. I have an aunt who died of brain tumour in her late forties and her mother (my grandmother) died of bowel cancer at 62. Surgeon has said radiation is next step but I am also considering mastectomy? I would like to hear about anyone’s journey with early breast cancer.

  • Hi @Missy81. Have you thought about, or has anyone mentioned some genetic counselling,  or geneitic testing, to help guide decisions?
Beyond that, the nature of DCIS, as the name suggests means that it is not an invasive cancer. At this point in time, there is no way of predicting  which cases of DCIS go on to become invasive, and which won't. That does nothing to take away the fear we all have. Ask your surgeon when you have your appoinment about whether further testing is warranted.
    Hope your appointment goes well.
    Take care
  • Thank you yes that has been mentioned by breast care nurse and I have another appointment this week so will know more than.
