Why is radiation so expensive ??

Hi ladies I am almost at the end of my chemo treatment and wondering what to do about my radiation therapy, I have been to see one place and I could not believe the out of pocket costs when you have private health insurance ! Isn't private health meant to make things easier for you when you are sick ? I was totally blown away by the costs in general but seriously I don't understand how it can be so much when you pay nothing for chemo ? I don't know whether to just go private or change to public ? It seems public has less of an out of pocket cost ? Why is this so ? Any advice to help me with my confusion would be greatly appreciated thank you.
  • I have private health Insurance but went public too@Jazz26. Some days there were delays but the radition team were professional, thorough and experts at what they do. I had a wonderful rad oncol and the admin staff at the hospital (Peter Mac Sunshine ) were great too.No regrets from me.
  • As many public hospitals are outsourcing their departments things like this are always an added cost for anyone who struggles to pay private health insurance.
    Bloody unfair stupid system.
  • Its disgraceful.l had private but went public at peter mac no charge
  • it's a disgrace. Go public or enter into very brisk negotiations with the service provider. They are generally very driven by finances and will accept a little less rather than miss out on accessing your wallet altogether. You need to be as ruthless as they are.

Up here it's the same mob anyway, I can't understand why anyone would go private to get exactly the same treatment in the same facility. You can choose to go elsewhere, just check out your options and figure out what you are willing to forego in the way of convenience if you want to cut your costs. You have a right to access treatment in the nearest public facility even if you have private health.

  • I went private for radiation on Central Coast NSW.
The only reason was that I told my surgeon (private) that if it was going to cost more than $500, I would switch to public.
She organised for me to go to the radiation clinic in their "team" who agreed to do the 25 cycles for under $400.
I received an account to take to Medicare on two occasions, they gave me a cheque and I paid the difference. I understand from then on I was bulk billed.
Strangely enough, when I took the two accounts with the out of pockets I had paid ($394)  to Medicare, Medicare then refunded an additional $220. I have no idea why, but I was grateful for it.
Apparently you can negotiate with the private clinics, but it helps to have your surgeon on side, and for them to be working in a team arrangement.
I guess it also helped that there was a big Cancer Centre at the public hospital on the other side of the railway line, so they had competition.
  • I went public in a private hospital for both chemo and radiation. Local public hospital doesn't fo radiation.  No waiting time, everything was done on schedule. No out of pockets.

  • I went public.  I had not private cover that would cover it.  I could have paid for private but would have added another pressure I didn't need.  All the best with resolving this.  Everything takes working through in this diagnosis. As if we aren't dealing with enough already.. gentle steps. xo
  • Private centres charge about 120-130% of the Medicare schedule. The treatment itself is the same but advantages of private are skipping a wait list and you have more control on appointment times. As a Radiation Therapist myself I am going public
