Shingles

Hello

Breast cancer diagnosed July 2015- already last year!

Had mastectomy (left- nipple preserving) and immediate reconstruction  with implant in August- just a slight problem with a seroma that was drained x3 post.

Had 33 sessions of radiotherapy October through early December - skin all healed by Christmas

Then developed Shingles on 28th December!!

Prior to this had been managing walks in various local groups, of between 2 and 4-6 hrs in length - 3-5 times per week- have not even managed to walk the dog since Shingles.

Have been in pain and taking various pain meds to target the nerve pain ( currently on a course of steroids) since..far worse than any of my cancer treatment

Anyone else had this?

Jan

  • Hi Janiot and Robyn,

Have you tried the shingles vaccination "Zostervax" to cut down your chances of contracting it?  My GP gave me my 1st vaccination 7 years ago (expensive then, at $500!) and I had a 2nd one recently (much better at $250!)  Unfortunately the government doesn't subsidise the vaccine.  I figured it was worth it, as the misery of shingles is the last thing you need on top of treatment.  Hope you are feeling better again now.   xx Michelle

  • Hi Jan,

I have had shingles but not in relationshipto my cancer. Its sounds like they are treating it reasonably. Pain meds are important to help you through it. Remember it is in the nerve endings hence your lack of energy. I found the lack of energy and tenderness lasted quite a while after the other symptons disappeared. Be gentle with yourself, take your time if your are trying to exercise, and as Robyn says it passes!

  • Yes I have had shingles. It is most unpleasant, but it will go away. There is not a lot you can do for it.Hang in there!! Cheers Robynxox
