Reconstructive surgery

Hi everyone. I attended the Breast Cancer Forum at Joondalup today and the subject of reconstructive surgery came up in the question and answer segment. I was relieved and dismayed when someone said how unhappy they were with the result of their reconstruction. I am also very unhappy with the look of my reconstructed breast. It looks awful! Very unnatural and nothing like a real breast in the way it looks and feels.  I was only able to have the expander and then an implant. I would be very interested to hear if anyone else is disatisfied with the look of their breast as a result of this method. I have other issues too but one thing at a time.

  • Hi s. miller,

I have only just received a notification about your post.  Sorry I can't help on this one either.  I do however urge you to do a lot of research into who does your surgery. From my own experience the results can be life changing! I'm not the only one to reccommend Tony Connell so he is worth considering.

    kind regards

    Liz

  • He is brilliant, isn't he?! I was so happy with everything he did for me. Stay healthy, Louise Ps I'm in Hillarys
  • My first surgeon, who mucked everything up was Mark Lee but the surgeon who put everything right was Tony Connell and he was brilliant. I wish I'd met him first then I wouldn't have gone through 4 years of hell.

  • I have had two different reconstructions for my breasts - the left one was a TRAM and I love it, the right one was a lat dorsi with expander & subsequent silicone implant - not so keen on this one (it feels hard & not natural, although it looks fine). If you are having reconstructions in Perth, I highly recommend my plastic surgeon, Mr Tony Connell in Subiaco. He has been brilliant over the years that I have been seeing him & will keep trying until you are happy with the result. Good luck, Louise
  • Hi Louise,I had no idea what to expect after surgery. I had every faith in my surgeon who had been recommended to me by my breast surgeon. I was shown a couple of photos of before and after surgery which all looked ok. The reality was different. If they are not able to use your own muscle tissue then it is very difficult for them to make something out of nothing. Once your bresst tissue has been removed there is nothing left, only a thin layer of skin. All they can do is expand the skin and put in an implant. Scar tissue does not stretch and as the scar is across the front centre of the breast that is why you will not get a rounded shape.  It does not move, it is cold to touch and hard.  I eventually came to accept what it is. There was also a problem with surgery on my other breast.
