Reconstruction through public system?

Hi - I had a double mastectomy in May with expanders being put in at that time with the plan of a reconstruction through the public system at RNSH - I found out a couple of weeks ago that my surgeon is on indefinite sick leave, she may be back at the end of January but no guarantee which has affected her lists.  So bascially I am left wondering if there is anything I can do to speed the process up?  Can I go back to my actual breast surgeon who did the mastectomy and referred me in the first place and ask for another referral to someone else's list, can someone advise as I have no idea how this works and to be honest and find this very difficult.  thank you

  • Hi @lmurray, I just wanted to welcome you to the online network and to let you know that if you need any help working your way around or finding information, to please just let me know.
  • Thank u ladies. First time I have used this site. Thought I could manage on my own but good to get this support.
  • Definitely go back to your breast surgeon and discuss what options there may be for you to go ahead with your surgery in the public system. Hopefully you can get in to see someone else soon xx
  • Hi @lmurray

I'm having a single mastectomy and reconstruction in a few months, but I have a Surgeon and Plastic Surgeon as am having a diep flap recon. My surgeon works through private and public as well so he and my plastic surgeon organised through Royal Melbourne Hospital. I dont see why you can't go back to your Surgeon who did the Mastectomy, that's what I'd do for sure, and ask for another recommendation and take it from there. Sorry can't help much more, let us know how you go! Hugs Melinda xo
  • I imagine you could go back for a new referral to another plastic surgeon. I'm  surprised the breast surgeon cannot complete the reconstruction as the next part is just a changeover. They will let you know the best option. Meanwhile stay on the current W/L at RNSH.
