Reconstruction blog

I'm finding it difficult to get information and pics of reconstruction. I was thinking we could start a blog where those who have had theirs done might be able to let us know the specifics. - Type of reconstruction - Recovery time - Aesthetic outcome Those like me who are trying to decide what to do will greatly appreciate your experience. Warm regards Louise

  • I agree - I am 12 months post mastectomy and 5 months post radiation and really want to be reconstructed but don't know where to start. Surely we cannot make such a life changing decision based on Googling images and hoping the name of the surgeon is next to the picture. This method relies on surgeons being great web designers!

I'm sure we can all agree that we know that our treatment team are busy helping with our survival - but they don't have much clue on reconstruction. i fear that i will go to see one surgeon, who will do their big sell on how wonderful they are, then move onto the next one, and they'll do their big sell and I won't know who to choose. I don't care about bedside manner and who has less fees, I want to be able to look forward to the best reconstruction for me.

It's as though we need a system where we can, on mass send all the reconstructive surgeons a before photo, our size, the treatment we have undergone and when - and have a surgeon 'bid' for our reconstruction! It sounds like commercialism, but it basically is, isn't it?

  • Hi Helen, I am in Sydney... Surgery was 3 weeks ago today. Took off the last of the steristrips this morning and can see that once it has all healed it will look good. Getting a bit more comfy each day! Jenn
  • Hi Jent28

Who did this surgery for you - it sounds really excellent.  Especially the FLAT stomach! LOL!

I have been debating about whether I should look into it - 1 yr post mastectomy next month.

At the time of mastectomy I didn't think I was going to have a reconstruction - but now I'm not so sure.

Are there some requirements that should have when having a mastectomy?

Are you in Melbourne - cause the surgery / surgeon sounds very interesting and I might look into it.

    cheers

    Helen

  • Type of reconstruction: bilateral muscle sparing free TRAM following bilateral skin sparing, nipple sacrificing mastectomy. Recovery time: at 2.5 weeks post surgery - no pain meds, most steristrips off, skin sensitive, not quite able to walk fully upright. Aesthetic outcome: excellent. Smooth breast contours except for one slight bump at the end of a beast incision. Flat stomach with reasonably smooth abdominal scar.
