Reconsrtuction

Hi all, well I finally decided to have a reconstruction after saying no for 4 years.

I saw my GP today & she seems to think as a Public Patient, I can not get one. There is no way I could afford to go Private, so I am asking if anyone here knows any different.

Any information would be greatly appreciated, so I can pass on to my GP.

Thank you in advance, Meg xxx

  • Hi Meg, Even after nearly four years I am still having recon work done in the public system. Had original mastectomy & immediate implant recon & now about to have yet another surgery to try & give some symmetry (including a reduction on other side) all through public.

Don't let anyone tell you that you can't have it done in public. It may mean you have to go on the waiting list, but thats nothing unusual for a non-lifethreatening procedure.

    Best of luck

  • Hi Meg. You should be able to have reconstruction in the public system aside from the things Louie has mentioned. I have had everything done in the public system in  Canberra. My original mastectomy & recon was nearly four years ago now & due to post radiation contracture I am still having surgeries in the public system. Hopefully the surgeon may come close to fixing things for good in a few weeks.

    Best of luck.

  • Hi Meg,

It can be a big step to take getting breast reconstruction after so long. Congratulations on taking that step.

Women most definitely can have breast reconstruction in the public system, you might find some specific barriers in your local region like waiting lists or capability and equipment (like for micro surgery options).

Many many women seek this surgery, like you, as a delayed procedure and can have wonderfully satisfying results. You can connect with these women and view their stories in the Breast Reconstruction Online Group. Request membership and we will help connect you.

Your next step might be to get a referral to a plastic surgeon, your GP should be able to assist you. You could also ask for recommendations in the private group or do a bit of a ring around or ask your local breast care nurse.

Lots to think about, but yes definitely you can get reconstruction in the public system, doesn't matter how long after BC it is.

    cheers Louie
