Nipple Recon

Hi Everyone,

Nipple reconstruction done two weeks ago, all healing well. surgeon has advised me to purchase a nipple guard to wear for the next 3 months. Just wondering if anyone can guide me in the do's & don'ts after nipple recon, & are there types of nipple guards better than others. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Many thanks!

  • Great advice Paula. I am using the shields also with great success! Thankyou  x

  • Thanks for your advice Jane. Have checked out the links you suggested & feel I'm 'under control' now! Once again thankyou for taking the time to respond to me.

  • Hi there,

I used the avent silicon nipple shields that breast feeding mothers use. They were quite pointy but I was advised to chop the tops off and cut them down to the right height. They were fantastic and I used them for 3 months. If you cut them down and wear a kind of padded or moulded type bra you could hardly notice.  Think my nipples didn't flatten as much because I protected them for so long.

    Good luck.

    Paula x

  • Hi there, how great is it to be on the final part of your reconstruction journey? Glad to hear all is healing well. I didn't use a nipple guard - more a construction of protective dressings & gauze but I know lots of ladies use nipple shields with great success. Don't think there's any particular brand that's better, but given Rowdy's comment maybe one that is not quite so tall & pointy, lol!!

If you're a member of the Breast Reconstruction group you might want to check out the Nipple Reconstruction stories under the Topic List (you can find this list on the main / front page for the group). There are quite a few posts about this subject and great tips on protecting your new additions!

You might also want to check out the information about nipple reconstruction on the Reclaim Your Curves website: www.reclaimyourcurves.org.au/nipple-reconstruction.html

Most nipples do flatten out a bit over time. Mine is still slightly raised (12 months down the track) and visible if I'm not wearing a bra under a thin shirt. It is also feels soft. I wouldn't mind a bit more projection but at the same time I don't want the bother of more procedures just to get my headlights on high beam!

Best of luck with it all. Jane xx

  • Hi my plastic surgeon gave me one after surgery. I found with mine that I had to put a sock down my bra as the guard made me look like my head lights were on all the time. I thought it was funny thinking about all these people who put socks down there bras to make them bigger. I had no issues with this surgery. good luck
