Mild pain that comes in waves

Hi ladies.

Greetings from Adelaide. Long time since I've been on here as things have been settling down..However, just now I have a small concern.

I had a TRAM flap reconstruction following left breast mastectomy back in June 2015.  Just in the last hour or so I have had mild pain/ache in the top of the left reconstructed breast which comes and goes in "waves"  but is sharp enough to keep me awake. I have also noticed a small hard lump (?fat necrosis) in that area as well. This pain is really kind of weird and hard to describe - ?muscle ache, but i haven't done any strenuous activity in the last 36 hours so I am a little worried. The pain has occurred a couple of times before but not for this long (nearly 2 hours now).  The pain itself comes in "waves" where for a short while everything seems okay and then just a short burst of pain/ache in the top part of the breast.

Is this normal? I am seeing both my breast surgeon and plastic surgeon in a month. It is now 11.30 pm on a Friday night and I am wide awake, not being able to go to sleep. Should I take some panadol and maybe see my GP or breast surgeon soon?

Cheers for advice. I will update (hopefully) soon.

Rachel xx

  • Hi Rachel, sorry to hear you've got this extra worry. I'm with the other ladies, get in to see your GP as soon as you can so that hopefully they can rule out any issues as quickly as possible. Best wishes, Jane xx

  • Hi Rachael,

That does sound a bit odd.  Pain out of the ordinary certainly needs to be checked out.  Your GP is certainly a good starting point, and he/she will probably be able to get you into see your breast and or PS a bit quicker. This is also a great question to put to the Breast Reconstruction Online Group.

I  hope  you get an answer soon and some relief from the pain.

  • Hi Rachel, I think you should see your GP now and ask for an ultrasound. It maybe nothing but if it's 'something' then you can fast track your ps appointment.xx

  • Hi I had tramflap surgery in 2014, if you are experiencing pain that is waking you up I would be ringing your PS, a month is long time to wait if the pain is waking you up.

  • Hi Rachel,

I cant offer any advice sorry but I do hope you are feeling better this morning? if not maybe a trip to your gp might be in order

    Big hugs

    Cheers Sue
