Long term complications of trams/diep flap?

Hi, this is my first post. I have just completed all my treatment for stage three, Triple Negative breast cancer and now I am researching breast reconstruction (either trams or diep flap on both breasts). I have read some scary stories! I know it is a serious operation with a lot of recovery time and generally people seem to be happy with their decision but I was wondering what the impact is a few years or more down the track? Any issues? Are you still happy with your decision? I am 40. Thanks.

  • Hi Nat,

Welcome to the online network. I just wanted to jump in to see if I can help you find what you are looking for or point you in the right direction. Ann-Marie

  • Oh my goodness you must be so over breast surgeries! I hope the diep is the last one for you! Thanks so much for replying and I hope your surgery goes well.

  • Thank you for your reply. Yes I'm in that group but I'm having trouble finding the info I need. I'm glad that your operation was a success. I've had a mastectomy so I know about the numb feeling - so weird!

  • Hi I'm coming up to 2 years since I had my mastectomy with immediate reconstruction. I had tram with a lift on the other side. My scars are fading and  I'm happy with the result. One issue  is no feeling   in my breasts now, sort of numb, one of the side effects we don't think about. My new breast look and feels natural which I'm really happy about. Dressed no- one would know and my scaring is under my breasts My abdominal scar is fading. The surgery was long and having to wear a brace for 6 weeks was annoying. Are you in the reconstruction group heaps of info and pictures, good luck with your choicexx

  • I am up to my third reconstruction. The first 2 were implants and they only last so long. First one was 12 years and it burst, this one Ihave now is around 14 years and I am having a DIEP done one the 26th August.
