Hello all,

I'm being advised that bilateral mastectomies and immediate reconstruction is a good option for me - with surgery in Melbourne.  If any of you have advice about the pros and cons I'd be very happy to hear it,

thanks

Lou

  • Hi Lou,

Big decision to make, but I am happy that I went ahead and had my recon. I was diagnosed with an invasive lobular carcinoma in June 2011. I ended up having to have a mastectomy after my lumpectomy showed no clear margins. So after 18 months of wearing a prosthesis I am so happy I had the op. The recovery is long and the first week I actually questioned myself for putting my body through such a huge surgery but now I am certainly not regretting it.

My girlfriend had a bilateral mastectomy with immediate recon and also does not regret it. She too had tram flap recon. Both our surgeries were in Sydney but with different surgeons. I am more than happy to ask her to contact you if you have any questions.

Wishing you all the very best.

  • Thanks to you both for sharing that - looks like it will be diep flap for me and in the not too distant future.

  • Thanks Liz!

Have survived barrage of extra tests after pathology actually indicated invasive cancer cells as well as dcis.  But CT and bone scan are normal - so hooray!!

  • Hi Lou,

Just had time to check my messages and here you are, on-line!!

For everyone else who participates in this blog, despite living hundreds of kilometres from each other Lou and I have been friends for many years (we know each other through our kids activities).

I've also had a double mastectomy and TRAM flap reconstruction.  I too think the reconstruction was worth it.

I've been holding you close to my heart whilst you've been in Melbourne.
