First FEC 100 chemo down - FINALLY!!!

Well it finally happened - not of course without further little hiccups but it did happen! The oncologist and nurses are convinced that I've had all the bumps first up and all will be smooth from now - I'm all for that positive thinking!

Started the week with a neupogen injection, yeh it worked and my count was almost normal for a start on Thursday. Had another chat with oncologist and we decided to try full dose. All started well with no issues accessing port and saline and prep drugs went through fine. Oh oh - didn't like the epirubicin with tingling and pain. Stop, check, try again, same so STOP for portascan but no staff available by this time in afternoon. Back we came for the scan Friday morning, all clear given and so we tried again. Did change sitting position and went for the snuggly warm blanket around the shoulders - all went well.

I've had no really worrying side-effects so far - drove home, have been for a walk each day (well rugged up in this freezing Tassie weather), lost most taste although not too foul and probably worst so far is the reflux/burping! If this continues I'm thinking I'm on easy street.

My capacity to work a full day and a half in the middle of the week and to drive most trips was probably helped by the adrenaline drive created by the arrival of my first grandchild on Wednesday night!! She is the most gorgeous little girl (I'm not biased!) and has certainly created apositive in our lives.

To those of you about to start your chemo journey, I hope this gives you some hope that "Expect the worst, accept what comes" is perhaps a good philosophy.

Must admit I am a bit tired now so will finish and allow my dear ones prepare something for dinner while I watch on!!

Take care one and all, Dette xxxxx

  • Hi Sandy and Louise

It is so great to hear that you have been able to go into work and experience that "this is what I want to do for me" feeling.

Must agree Sandy that the what are you doing here comments do hit hard and yet I'm sure that I'm going to get there attitude will win over for you.

Louise, I do hope all went okay with the oncologist today.

Keep at it lovelies, Dette xxx

  • I am so happy for you Dette for feeling so healthy and able to do what you want to.

I went to work on the weekend, only to have other people to take time out for healing. Every second person who greeted me questioned me "what the hell are you doing here??" was one greeting. Isn't it nice to be appreciated!!! :)

Well, I told them I felt so good, I wanted to be at work doing what I love to do.

So good on you for taking the time to enjoy being "normal" and having some "me" time to do the daily living.

Enjoy your week, month, year - life. That is what I am looking forward to - that next year, I will look back on all of this and say - I am so happy to have got through THAT!!!

    Smiles and hugs to you

    Sandy

  • A huge thank you for all the continuing comments and apologies for my lack of and acknowledgement and replies. I've actually been feeling so well that I have worked almost every day for the last week and a half, then of course making sure I get my Grammy cuddles each day and doing some housework and cooking has meant very little 'spare' time.

All this lets me feel 'normal' and more than a cancer patient and so is really helping me keep positive and ready for the fight/s!!

I hope you are all having some wins however mini along the way. All the best wishes and super vibes coming your way.

  • Hi Dette,

That is great news. I emphasise with Louise about the driving though. It has been just on 3 weeks since my surgery and I hate to put my partner out to drive me everywhere. I can't work to get to my clients either - have to educate them about Skype!!!

I am waiting this week to see my oncologist for radiation and also another specialist for hormone treatment. So don't know what is happening there. Thanks for sharing the advice about expecting the worse and going with what ever happens. If my tummy can take the nerves, i will go with that too!!!

Keep up with the fight - you make the battle sound easy.

    Take care

    Sandy x

  • Hi Dette

So glad to hear you havn't been suffering as a result from your first dose! Just keep having those naps and cuddles with your darling grand daughter..

Today I'm off to see the surgeon for the first time since my op and will hopefully find out what lays ahead. My fingers are crossed.

Hope the rest of the treatments go as well for you. xLouisex

  • Hi Dette,  When I read your blog I was blown away by how you are fairing - going great guns.  Keep it up girl.  Congratulations on the birth of your grand-daughter - what joy she will bring you.  Remember to rest and go with the flow when that adrenaline wears off. XLeonie

  • Hi Dette

So glad to hear that "Finally" it al happened, even with a few hiccups..hope the side effects stay away..

I'm jealous that you can drive yourself..being only 1 week on from surgery, I'm not allowed near the car yet and as an independant woman this really bugs me!

Good luck with you ongoing Chemo - we are all thinking of you...xLouisex
