Weekend Workout Blog Post Three: Heart Foundation Walking
WATCH the video: Why we love walking!
Almost anybody can safely take up walking. Walking is the simplest way to start and continue a fitness and health journey. Walking costs nothing and is easy and safe. But we do recommend you talk to your doctor before taking on a more strenuous regimen. It is also wise to talk to a doctor if you have any questions about your health or plan to start more vigorous workouts, especially if you haven’t been active recently.
Walking is popular because it is suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels. It can be done just about anywhere and doesn’t require any special equipment or training. Being active on a regular basis is an important part of a healthy lifestyle and walking is a great way to look after your health. It helps you feel stronger, more energetic and happier and improves your overall quality and enjoyment of life.
Heart Foundation Walking is structured around organised groups as this incorporates a social aspect into walking. When people walk in groups, they can talk while they walk and it’s a great way to get to know your neighbours and neighbourhood. Walks are located all over Australia to find your nearest group visit: http://walking.heartfoundation.org.au/walking/find-walk/ or phone 1300 36 27 87.
If you prefer to walk on your own, or can’t access a group nearby, you can join the Heart Foundation Walking’s Virtual Walking Community and register as an individual to track your walks online. You will be notified when a new “real world” group starts in your area so you can decide if you would like to join in. With the Virtual Walking Community, you can walk any time and place you like, regardless of where you live, work, or play. By registering as a virtual walker you can also track incidental activity such as walking to public transport, using the stairs, or parking further away from the shops.
Joining Heart Foundation Walking will help you make being active a regular part of your day. Remember, as little as 30 minutes of daily walking provides many health benefits.
Is anyone currently part of a walking group?
