Hi all

I stupidly don't have life insurance and now I can't find anyone to insure me.

I've had a successful lumpectomy and had the all clear and I'm now having chemo and radiotherapy.

Does anyone have any recommendations of who might insure me or is it impossible now?

Thanks! :)

    Hi M1mmy

I’m Eliisa from BCNA’s Policy team and I’m hoping to provide you with some useful information to your query re: life insurance.

We are aware that accessing life insurance with a breast cancer diagnosis can be difficult.  Our advice would be for you to start by calling Cancer Council’s 13 11 20 and ask to be linked to the Cancer Council Pro Bono legal service.  This is a free service that links eligible people affected by cancer to legal and financial support. You may also wish to inquire if they have been successful in these situations before.  You can also access their service online through the following link: http://www.cancercouncil.com.au/31192/get-support/practical-support-services-get-support/legal-financial-support/pac/

Another option would be to call around to individual insurance providers about your eligibility to life insurance. Whether it is possible to take out life insurance depends on the nature of your cancer and under Australian Insurance law applicants must disclose any health information that may influence their decision to offer cover.  Should you be unsuccessful in an application, we suggest that you ask the insurance company to provide an explanation of the outcome to you. If you feel you have been treated unfairly, you can also choose to complain to the relevant anti-discrimination body in your state or territory and follow their approach to have your situation reviewed. You will likely need medical evidence to support this from your health provider.

Hope this is helpful to you. The link below from Life Insurance Finder may provide you with some more information, however, if you have any further questions or concerns, please feel free to private message me. Happy to help!

It would be interesting to hear what advice you get. My understanding is that you can still get insurance it's just that they will not cover you for any pre existing condition. You would still be covered for everything else. But I agree there is more you would want to know about how that works. Maybe double check you don't have insurance as part of your super as well, although I'm sure you've looked at that.
