Life is great
In February 2013 I had just received my annual letter for my mammogram on the Monday. Tuesday morning in the shower I brushed my arm over my right breast while washing my hair an felt pain. I felt the area an found a lump. I call breast screen straight away an got a cancellation appointment that day.
Four years earlier the day of my dad's funeral I had received a call while in Victoria from breast screen that I had a mass in my right breast which they were monitoring each year.
I had been having regular mammograms since I was 40 as I have a family history on dads side with his mum and sister both having had breast cancer.
Once the mammogram had been done they told me that the mass had not changed that everything looked the same..but I said no it's not the same there is a lump and I insisted that they do more. As I am laying on the exam table while they take a biopsy they are still telling me this is so unnecessary breast cancer doesn't hurt it is just a cyst....10 days later when I had to go back for my results the told me I had DCIS not cancer just changed cells. By the 8th of March I had had the first of my lumpectomies and was told I had breast cancer. Two days later Saturday I had a second procedure with margins still not clear. On the Monday my surgeon called at 8.30 at night...an I thought I have the best dr in the world checking in to see how I was. Haha he was called to see if my hubby an I could come an see him the next day not much sleep was had that night.
The next day he told us that I had to have a mastectomy my margins were still not clear. A week later the first of my mastectomies was performed with immediate reconstruction. With the two lumpectomies and the mastectomy they found 28cm of cancer in my right breast. I opted three months later once the reconstruction was finished to have the left side removed and LCIS was found plus changed cells so cancer in both. Seven operations in all. I have been working with a personal trainer for over a year now doing two pt per week working on my strength, as my left side has a lot scare tissue and had restriction of movement. We have worked to free that up and get my strength back. I still have a long way to go with numbness in my back muscles and under the arms but we are making awesome progress. I am stronger and feel so much better. Life is good.

Hey jill.
You know i would love to know where this story about breast cancer not hurting comes from. I remember i was told the same thing years ago by my mums surgeon when i found a lump which was a cyst. That was why when i found my painful lump in may 14 i didnt panic. Low and behold it was breast cancer. I too have had regular screening since mid 30s due to family history on mums side. Life is good and we have to live it to the full as we have lots to be grateful for. Take care and stay strong ????
