Sorry bit late to the discussion. I had a unilateral mastectomy in August, followed by breast reconstruction - tissue expander on the same day. My Plastic Surgeon said that the expander could stay in for up to 6 years, so I have time to decide between an implant or DIEP. I was told that if radiation was required that the breast tissue expander would actually provide a shield from the radiation therapy for other parts of the body. Although post surgery, the surgical wound was slow to heal and had me back in for a debridement procedure, I am happy with my decision.
