second opinion re pathology

Hi, I have been having this growing feeling inside me that something may have been missed with my pathogy post mastectomy. The reason I am so worried is that when I initially had my fine needle biopsy to diagnose my lump, the pathology came back clear. when i had another lump and another biopsy, they re checked the first biopsy and said oh sorry this is cancerous as well!!! so as you can see i have trust issues with pathology reports. It is a few months since my mastectomy. can i ask for another pathologist to look at it and how do I go about doing this?

  • I feel that you should definitely ask your doctor to go over your report with you and explain it to you in detail. When I got my pathology back it was HER2 positive.I was given my treatment plan, and for 2 weeks I was reading up all about MY type of cancer. Then I got a call from the oncologist telling me that in the second test,(which I didn't even know they were doing) it was showing HER 2 negative. My treatment plan changed immediately,( only 4days before chemo) but I was worrying about whether the second test was correct.I couldn't understand how they could know which one was right! I asked the doctor, and she explained to me that with pathology results,it is not just a matter of yes or no.A lot of things in the report add up to a particular diagnosis, and without us even knowing,a lot of results ( such as mine) are rechecked because false positives are not uncommon.I definitely think that if you ask your doctor to explain the report to you in detail, you will feel a lot better, and have a better understanding .Cheers xoxRobyn
