The above comments pretty much cover everything. I too was very anxious before I had my mastectomy in August. As mentioned above, I was surprised at how little pain I was in. I found the awkward part was the drains, which I carried around in a bag, but they were removed painlessly a week after surgery. If people know you have had surgery then they may look at your chest area - but they are usually friends and family and you don't mind! Otherwise, no one really notices. I wore baggy shirts until I could wear my Berlei Bra, and now I am back in my normal bras with my fake boobie - the cushioned pad I got from my wonderful breast care nurse in hospital.
Stay strong - you will be amazed at how quickly you recover from the surgery. I certainly was!!
