Phyllodes tumor

Hi all My name is hilda, 33 years old and married. My obgyn found a 2cm lump in my left breast and asked me to do usg and refer me to a breast surgeon. My bs then asked me to do a core biopsy.a week later, the result came out and it is a benign phyllodes tumor. It's said it does not show any malignancy however there is a mild nuclear atypia and metoses at 3/10. He will do partial mastectomy to remove the tumor with some margin. My surgery is within 2 weeks. I'm really scared, because i can feel that my lump is much bigger than before. At least now the width is 4cm . My biopsy was done on 19 aug and usg was on 18 jul. my dr said it is swollen because of the biopsy. i just had my period and noticed it was bigger before my period started. Now when it stops, the lump does not get smaller. So im thinking, did the biopsy cause the tumor grows faster? Or if it's swollen, is it normal to have that swollen 1 month after biopsy? Does anyone have similiar experience? Thank you for reading my post. Hilda

  • Hi Hilda, there is a surgeon in Sydney that I have heard has an interest in phyllodes tumours and has done some research on them. He is professor Andrew Spillane. I think he works out of North shore Hospital. Hope this helps. Cheers Katie.

  • Hi katie I had my operation done 9 days ago and i had post op meeting with my bs today. It's a 4cm borderline PT. My doctor mentioned that the superior of the tumor has malignancy sign and he had taken enough margin, and because of the position of the lump is in very top end of my breast, there is no more breast tissue could be taken. He said i dont have to worry and come back in 3 months for usg. I would like to ask 2nd opinion from other bc. I found in one of the post that you know a bc in sydney who is interested in phyllodes. Would you mind to share it with me? Thank you very much. Hilda
  • Thank you so much  for the info Katie.  Definitely will tell my surgeon to get the clear margin of 1cm.   Cheers. Hilda

  • Hi Hilda, phyllodes tumours are very fast growing so it could be a combination of all the things you have mentioned. If you are on facebook I would recommend joining the phyllodes support group as they have lots of information in a closed group too. When you have your surgery make sure that you insist on clear margins of at least 1cm even though your tumor from biopsy was classed as benign. Unfortunately they cannot tell the grade of the tumour from biopsy alone - you will find out the grade of your tumour once it has been removed. Best to get a good margin in the first instance than having to go back for more surgery to get wide margins. I hope this helps. Best wishes. Katie.
