Mastectomy Lumps & bumps

It will be 3 weeks next Wednesday since I had my mastectomy & just wondered if any of you lovely ladies that have gone through it can help me. I seem to be having strange looking lumps & bumps almost like mini boobs coming up in all sorts of strange places above below & at the side of scar.

I know a lot of it is the fluid that was from the drain & the physiotherapist has shown me how to sweep it with sorbolene, but just wondered if some of it could be muscle as it is harder in some than others.

I am hoping it will feel better by the 9TH March when I go for my axillary clearance.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hugs to all.

Eileen

  • That is just what it feels like Linda like I have mini boobs popping up here & there. I will continue massaging & hope it's not too bad after the clearance.

  • I had lots of lumps and bumps too. Looked like I had half grown my boob back! Most of it was fluid which I had drained off every few days. But the hardening is probably scar tissue. My Physio told me to massage and keep up with the exercises. THis did help. I'm currently having radiation and now the area is swollen. I'll just keep on with the massaging and exercises....!

  • Thank you Brenda I have saved the page to my favourites as I am sure It will also help after the Axillary clearance.

I have actually been out shopping today, it made a change from all the hospital visits I have been on lately.

Hope your still feeling good after your chemo yesterday.

  • Thank you Deanne I will continue to massage them. I do not often see the BC nurse as she is based at a different hospital but I do have another physio appointment coming up for my exercises. It is really good that we can come on this forum & get some good advice.

    Hope you are keeping well.

  • Hi Eileen,

After my mastectomy the area especially around the scar did feel very bumpy and some of these bumps were probably just the scar tissue hardening. I think the more we massage the area the better both for moving the fluid and for softening the scar tissue.

I know my surgeon told me that most of my hard areas would continue to soften for a year or more. If you are at all worried then ask someone from your medical team about it (breast care nurse or physio would be able to help I'm sure).

Almost 3 years since my mastectomy and most of those bumps and lumps are soft now, but a massage to keep the fluid moving is still something I do once a week or if it feels like I need to. Hope your surgery on the 9th goes well. Take care.
