I read posts that say "at least I know I did everything I could to stop a recurrence" or" I decided to have both off to look symmetric". Wrong on both occasions, a good plastic surgeon can match up to your other breast.
I recently read a book by Jonhn Boyages, Breast Cancer Taking Control. A study was done at a major Sydney hospital where they looked at what operations surgeons were performing ie: lumpectomy vs mastectomy. One was found to do more lumpectomies and another more mastectomies even though they were both give different types and stages of breast cancer. So it has been proven that some surgeons prefer to do a particular type of surgery, this makes it even more important that we are given all the information so that we can make an informed choice.
I am pleased to say that my surgeon said in my case it wasn't necessary to remove my breast, which is what I requested when I was first diagnosed.
So pleased you posted this blog, take care,
Candice
