DCIS and Mastectomy
Hi,
I have been diagnosed with DCIS in the left breast. I have had two lumpectomies under hook wire. The first hook wire was put in the wrong area and came back negative but my surgeon knew that wasn't right and after speaking to the radiologist went in again in the right area and that pathology came back with high grade 33mm DCIS involving the margins. My surgeon has booked me in for a mastectomy in the next 2-3 weeks as he said it is very widespread.
I am feeling pretty surreal at the moment and am trying to comprehend having my left breast gone. I am a D cup so it is a fair amount to lose. It feels weird to tell people I don't have invasive breast cancer but I am going to lose my breast. Sorry I think I am rambling, but to be honest I am feeling pretty nervous about it and worried about how I am going to react once it is done. I am 41 and have three children and a wonderfully supportive partner.
I think I just need some reassurance that everything is going to ok.
Thanks for such a great support network
Kelly

- JeanineGMemberIt must be hard for you to be on the sidelines whilst your mum is going through this tough time. Just remember how lucky she is to have a loving daughter standing next to her while she goes through this. I hope her surgery goes well and that she has an uncomplicated recovery. If you need to chat, we are all here to answer any questions or concerns you may have. Sending hugs, Jeanine xxxSign in to react to this post

- Akal05MemberSo happy for you Kelly that everything went well for u!! I'm actually suggesting to my mum to wait for the reconstruction as well, just see how she feels after her mastectomy!! Gee if a belly dancer can do it I'm sure my mum can too!! Good on you!! Must be a big adjustment!! I just didn't know a reconstruction was such a big operation till yesterday when we saw the plastic surgeon!! Just have to book a date for the surgery for her!! Thank u so much for your comment!! Sorry to hear about your mum. I had my mastectomy last year for my DCIS and my surgeon actually advised waiting 1-2 years before thinking about a reconstruction if I wanted but I decided pretty quickly after that I really didn't want to go through any more surgeries. I have a prostetic which I wear going out and to work and it is great, feels and looks normal. I have to admit sometimes I can't be bothered to put it on if I am just going out to the shop so I just wear a loose top and nobody seems to notice but if they did, well bad luck!! LOL. Thankfully, my results were good and it hadn't spread to the lymph node so I didn't have to have any radiotherapy and just go and see my surgeon every six months. If it happens to pop up in my other breast I would have no hesitation in having another mastectomy. I also belly dance and after adjusting costumes (as there is no cleavage anymore) I have performed again and nobody realises.
I hope this helps, I was worried at first about how I would cope after a mastectomy but I feel completely normal and happy. I have a wonderful family who supported me completely and made me feel and still make me feel like a normal, beautiful person.
Lots of love to you and your mum

It never rains but it pours! So sorry she has extra trouble with her ovary. Hopefully its not anything bad. I have had ovarian cysts that were benign. Good luck with it all.

Its a very confusing time for her, must be so hard to make a decision like this!! I'm not sure how she will cope emotionally without a breast!! And to top it all she has a 3.8 cm cyst in her ovary!! She has had blood tests (blood results were all clear) Seeing the gynaecologist again next week!! Akal5 XxxxSign in to react to this post
