Absolutely devastated πŸ’” - Less then 2 weeks out of surgery we loose our beloved dog

So this post is not so much related to the cancer itself but more to loosing my beautiful dog and we, especially me are all beyond devastated.

One week after surgery, my dog got the seious life threatening condition, bloat. We rushed her to emergency hospital in the middle of night. She underwent emergency surgery to save her life (lots of $$$$), she came home the following day, started recovering, only to decline yesterday (don't know why). We rushed her again to the hospital only to need to put her down cause the prognosis was not good.

It crushed us, me especially πŸ’”  I'm in absolute shock and disbelief.  Devastation is an understatement.

I am absolutely devastated and heartbroken πŸ’” πŸ˜₯  Before this, she was a healthy 9.5 years old and apart from missing her, I keep on blaming myself on many "what ifs".  What if we took her to the hospital earlier, would she have a chance of survival, what if vets made a mistake, was I a good owner, etc... I also feel horrible that since the surgery I didn't give her much attention and that is haunting me.

While I know what is happening to me is a priority, but this completely broke me. I can't believe she is gone. She had her little kingdom set up in our alfresco area, and I can't bear to look at it or even go there.

I don't even know why I started this discussion, I suppose I just needed some extra wisdom or help or something. I don't know.

It just feels like I'll never get over this.

If anyone can help with with any words of wisdom, it would really mean a lot to me.

Thank you for reading 😒😞

Wishing everyone the best

  • What a difficult time you and your family have had, I'm so sorry. It can feel like the universe is lining up against you when you are hot with multiple traumas at once, and you must be feeling so sad, angry, lost...

I had to put down our dog three days before I started chemo. In a weird twist of events, she was a rescue dog as her original owner has died of breast cancer. To say that put my brain and heart into a spin would be an understatement.

I had to work really hard on focussing on how lucky we were to have her and that her time has come, whether I was ready for it or not. I don't know that there's an easy way through losing a cherished pet, a bit like no easy way through treatment. But you will get through it.

As a family we elected to get a new dog, and whilst I was resistant at first I'm glad we opened our hearts again.

Let yourself do all the crying you need. It's better to finish the cry than to rush the cry x

Thank you BoobVoyage that is exactly how I'm feeling. Like everything is turning to s...! So unfair and I'm so angry and devastated at the same time. She truly was my best friend πŸ’”

Your story is heartbreaking as well, putting her down 3 days before chemo is brutal. That's hard, but I'm glad to hear that you got a new furry friend to love again.

For me, at the moment grief is intense and I can't believe she is gone πŸ’” 😒 She was my special girl and helped me through really tough moments. Now, she is not here any more. It's so hard.

Thank you again for your kind message, I really appreciate it. πŸ™

  • I am so sorry for the loss of your beloved pet - they give such unreserved love and ask little in return - and they welcome you at the door every time you walk in .... and sad to see you go to work ....
Furkids are a really important part of our lives, specially if you haven't had children - they become your surrogate child xx  So the emotional distress is totally normal and acceptable.

ANY grief is hard to deal with .... and it really just takes time, I'm afraid xx

Maybe further down the track, when you might think of getting another dog .... maybe considr a rescue dog? A few friends have rescue dogs & they are SO lucky to have them!  THey've slotted into the family dynamics so well .... and even tho you'll never stop grieving the loss of pooch .... the new pooch in your lives will bring smiles & laughter again

    take care xx

Thank you arpie . It is so hard and I'm just devastated. My beautiful girl was with me when noone else was. Along with my family, she helped me get through many hard periods in my life.  I would do anything to pet that beautiful head of hers again and have those eyes look at me. Fur heads means so much...

You are so right for everything you said, thank you for reaching out.

      I really appreciate it πŸ™
