Painful

Hi Ladies, I'm 11 weeks post radiotherapy of 30 treatments after a wide local incision and for the last week the bottom half of my breast has been very sore after a few weeks of no pain. Then today I've had sharp pains in it again like you do when the radio stirs up the surgery site. I spoke with my specialist via his nurse last week and was told it can sometimes happen to some women that the pain comes back. I'm also on letrozole and wonder if this plays a part. Bit frustrating when it seemed to be healed. Has anyone had this experience and what did you do to help. I'm taking panadol all the time and that is keeping it at bay. Thanks Maria.

  • Hello

im sorry to say that I was happy when I logged in and saw your post. It's exactly how I'm feeling. I finished radiation to my left breast Christmas week. I didn't hav an skin problems and r great fun for that. But the pain in my breast has been horrible furniture radiation. It all seemed to settle down but has flared up this last week. I was really worried cause I had thoughtlessly carried shopping and other heavy things with that side and thought it was due to that but after reading your post sounds like it is normal. Wired sensations tingeling and sharp pains through my breast. The radiation definitely does weird things to you. Hard to know what feelings we need to be alerted by. I am suppose to start tomoxifen straight away but are delaying that till after I have a holiday in a week so will b starting in about a month.

Every grateful to this site and all you inspiring ladies.

  • Thanks Adean, not something to look forward to but good to know it may be normal.

  • Hi girls Ihad bc in 2012 and I still get pains in the radiated breast infrequently. my mum who had bc at 35 is now 80 and still gets stabbing pains. I spoke to my surgeon and radio onco and their responses were sorry its all the nerves we cut during surgery and onco said well we do actually cook your boob from the inside out! good point. My breast is still sore to touch in certain areas and apparently may never go. adean

  • Thanks Lyn, no redness just warmth in the area where lump was removed. No temps or feeling unwell just pain and sharp stabbing pain. Just thought it had all healed up and settled down. Looks like its back to the panadol. good luck girls. Mastitis is not nice, I had that once when breastfeeding and I certainly don't feel like that.

  • I've heard the same as Lyn, Maria. I'm still having radio treatments.

  • Hi Maria, can't help too much, but how does the breast look? Any signs of redness, have you had a fever at all? I only finished my 30 sessions Friday week ago, but I had mastitis after only 10 sessions on the underside of my breast.

I have also read that you can get pain after radiotherapy for about a year. Hope it settles soon for you.

    Take care, Lyn
