Chemo Belly

Hi Everyone, I had Chemo for the first time yesterday. My treatment is every 2 weeks for 8 weeks then every week for 12 weeks. I’m having terrible wind in my stomach, it’s bloated & the burps are huge, long & loud. It’s continuous & makes me feel nauseous. I’ve taken Ginger probiotics, D-Gas, Gaviscon & Homeopathy. They all help for a short period of time & only mildly. Can anyone share there experiences.... On the funny side, at least it’s not my bum talking 😂.

  • @Universal Your bum will probably have a go tomorrow :(

I found soda water was useful, it generated gas so at least I could have a satisfying burp, on my terms. It also helped with the dread mouth fuzz which will probably arrive in the next couple of days. If you are struggling with nausea, ask for some antiemetics--it's better to keep on top of these things before it all turn into a spewfest. I know, it's more wretched pills, but you don't want the alternative. Those drugs do lead to constipation--I found prunes were my friend and make sure you consume a bit of good quality oil in your diet. Coconut oil worked for me. I don't know if pro/prebiotics helped, but I took them anyway.

Chemo really interrupts your gut bacteria. No-one tells you this stuff before hand, but I can assure you your experience is really common. You may find that foods you enjoyed previously suddenly become unacceptable--that a personal trial and error situation that we have to plough through too. Mxx
  • Hi Zoffiel, Thank you for your great advice, I had soda water on my list to try today. It’s always good to hear it’s a norm. 🌻
  • Hi @Universal I have had one round of chemo and looking at a similar chemo regime.  Soda water seems good to me. I added a bit of prune juice and it helps in many ways 😀.  I would get something from the oncologist for nausea and tell them about the bloating too.  Maybe try also eating smaller amounts too if you aren't already. I am mainly having bland foods so plenty of vegetable soups.  Hope you improve.  Hugs
  • Hi Cath62, Thank you for the great advice, I did take the nausea drugs but it didn’t do anything, I’ll discuss it with them. Yeh I think small bland eating is a great idea. Cheers 🌸
  • Hi @Universal I developed reflux during chemo and my oncologist prescribed some medication that sorted it out - took one every morning. I finished chemo (4 x AC and 12 x taxol) 4 weeks ago and I no longer take the meds as the reflux has gone. Definitely mention it as they have so many things they can give you. I know it seems like another medication, but I figured I was getting so much, what was another and I am all for making the ride a little more tolerable. @Zoffiel has great advice, the sofa water saved me and I used to add lemon juice to it as well. I also ate my weight in fruit tingles - great for your mouth and stomach. Every morning I had an egg on toast as it was one food that never tasted different and it was good quality protein. I found eating more earlier in the day helped and then I just had a smaller meal at night. Take care and I wish you well. 🌻
  • Macbeth thank you so much for the wonderful info. I’ll definitely will chat to them about reflux medicine. Fruit tingles , now that’s a childhood memory 😊.
  • Heartburn was awful for me and bloating and cramps. I started on nexium and took it right through till after chemo was done and it was brilliant.
  • Talk to your onc about better meds (ring up the clinic - don't wait for your next appointment).  They send you home with the bare minimum of meds and they're not always enough.
  • Thank you Sister, I’m happy that I’ve now got it under control, I’ll definitely talk to them about it though at my next appointment  💕🌻
