Anyone used a razor to shave their head?

Dear friends, just a quick question.... My hair needs to go but just wondering what your thoughts are on shaving with a razor and if so what type did you use?

I don't think I'll cope with the short stubble as my scalp is already very itchy and sensitive!

Thanks in advance

  • Dear friends, thank-you all so much for your advice and sharing experiences.

Mum came over yesterday and helped me to clip it back really short. Quite a bit of the stubble came out in the shower and now have some very smooth areas.

My head is no where near as itchy or as sore as it was prior to clipping it off.

I have some really nice hats and scarves to wear and feel real comfortable.

  • Hi Shaz, I got my partner to get the clippers out and we took it down to as short as we could get and the rest fell out in the shower, quite a surreal feeling really, all the best,

  • Hi I was recommended to clip the hair not use a razor to prevent any cuts or nicks on the scalp which could become infected due to being on chemo. I had my husband do it and he made a great job.I found my scalp very painful as the hair began to drop clipping resolved the problem. My hair was already short so could imagine it would be worse if your hair was long.

  • Whoops pressed post too early.  I got a bit irritated during chemo and used aqueous cleanser and moisturiser. Cheap and awesome!!!

  • It was clippers for me. Razor rash would not have been a good look..  I found it easy to sort..  Good luck xoxoxox

  • Hi I went to the hairdresser who I got my wig from and they used clippers. Then she cut my wig for me which looked really good, very close to my hair as this is what I wanted as I worked during chemo. A word of warning be careful my head did get infected and was red and sore you never know what is going to happen while on chemo

    Good luck

  • Hi Shaz

Whilst I fortunately did not have to do this, my hairdresser said he goes to ladies homes to cut their hair if they prefer.  Otherwise he helps them by doing a late appointment when his staff have gone home.  He does not recommend shaving due to the risk of infection and the added 'itch factor' from shaving.

Hope this helps.  Good luck.  Thinking of you.

  • The safest way is to get the hairdresser to do it as you may cut your skin... and great care should be taken so as not to have any wounds during this time. Many hairdressers do not charge for this. Mine cried! If you dont have a regular hairdresser even a barber would do.. cheaply.

Hi Shaz, I just had mine clipped, as my hair fell out in heaps in an afternoon. I already had my wig and hats ready, so we just got on with it. At night I found that the little bits left were on my pillow, so wore a little skull cap to bed to catch the random hairs. Best of luck and warm wishes, Tracey B ??

  • I went to my hairdresser and got him to shave my head.It was the best thing for me.I took along a gorgeous blue bamboo turban that I had bought, and just slipped it on before I left the salon. My daughter and husband came with me,and I made my appointment for the last one of the day .There was no one else there. My daughter took pics, which I am so glad of now,but at the time I was not keen at all.Cheers Robyn xox
