Here Goes
Hello. My name is Jenny and I live on the NSW/Vic Border. I have gone to post in here a couple of times but backed out. Denial maybe?
On Wednesday I was officially given the diagnosis of BC. I have had a large lump for around a year but I have 26JJ sized breasts and the lump is down along where the bra wire sits. I put it down to thickening because of the bra wire. I recently started Lite N Easy and after loosing around 10kg I noticed that the lump was much larger than I thought. It has its own postcode ;p Its 5cm x 3cm x 2cm.
So I did the mammo and ultrasound and knew when I called for results, that the urgency by my GP to get me in to see her, that something was very wrong. That day I had bloods, CT scan and was booked in for biopsy. All along I was doing as much research as possible. Armed with knowledge I have always found it easier to deal with things. Must be part of the anxiety I have day in and out.
I met my surgeon on Wednesday who gave me the diagnosis. I was alone at the appointment and was in shock, none the less. I guess I was hoping it was just a mass that they just wanted to remove for safety sake. I do remember asking him what type of Cancer and I vaguely remember him saying Metastatic and that its very common. I am booked in for a lumpectomy and node removal on the 22nd. (Tuesday Week). I am then too do 5 weeks radiation.
I've got all of that in my head and ready to deal with. But now I am reading all of the paraphernalia and Metastatic means I have it in other places in my body? Do they know where? Does this mean I will probably have to do chemo after radiation?
I know I am overthinking all of this and should take it one day at a time. I work 3 days a week and also on partial DSP. Being at work keeps my mind off things. I am planning on taking vacation leave for the rest of the week after my lumpectomy. I am so grateful that my oldest of 2 (daughter) is able to travel up from Melbourne to bring me home from the surgery and stay with me for a couple of days.
Another questions. I had been using implannon rod to control my periods, over the years. The last one was put in around 2011 and is still in my arm somewhere. As I have very thick arms I cant feel it and haven't bothered about it. I believe that it has run out of the hormones anyway after all of this time. Is this something I should tell my surgeon about?
I have so many questions. When will I start radiation? Will someone contact me or do I contact them?
I met my Breast Care Nurse but she was heading on vacation to France the next day. I have the number of another one and I will phone her and make contact with her this week.
It's like my whole life is about the Cancer now. I am being strong in front of everyone else but these times at home alone I am terrified.
Sorry if this is all over the shop but that is how my head works. I have been treated and continue to be treated for Depression an Anxiety for close to 20 years and have only recently found a good balance. The Lite N Easy journey was me actually caring about myself. Some days I shake so much it looks like I am having a min seizure.
Usually I am upbeat and cheeky and able to find the lighter sign of things. But tonight I am low.
Any insights would be wonderful.

- Kiwi_AngelMember@TabooGal hope u r feeling a little less sore today. I didn’t have that procedure done - straight to the surgeries for me but sounds very painful xoxo
- TabooGalMember@kmakm @Sister ouch! How do they do a blood biopsy? I think my node area is so sore because one of the surgeons said they had to dig real deep for it. You all are amazing women. No matter how unwell you are you're still around for advice. True Angels on Earth. Xxx
- SisterMemberYes, one of them! The anaesthetic hadn't quite taken in the whole area that they were taking the tissue from and the last one I felt (and then they peeled me off the ceiling).
- kmakmMemberThe bloody biopsy was one of the most painful things in my BC experience. I'm glad I didn't know before going in. Ouch!
- TabooGalMember48 hours after lumpectomy and feeling alot better than I expected. Was concerned about a punching pain at the back of my armpit but when getting ready for my first shower in days I dared to look in a mirror. Bloody hell I have a wound right across my armpit. Funny how it's easier to cope with pain when you know there is a reason. So I let "Thelma and Louise" free from my bra for a shower and "Louise" let out a cry in protest. Never thought I would ever be excited to get a bra on!
- TabooGalMember@annsan. Finally home after waiting 12 hours for surgery. Ended up having to stay overnight. Got an app with surgeon next Wednesday so will know what go is then.
@ShellSurfing you should see Albury Wodonga now! Beechworth bakery is always packed! I hope you're doing much better now. It's a journey none of us want to take but we are warriors
@jennyss aww that is beautiful. Am feeling less pain with endone and a good bra!
Am I meant to be exercising my arm? They had to go real deep for the SNB. A nurse in the day unit was going to tell me but day unit shut down and I ended up in a surgical unit that was just too busy.
Part 1 down. Bless all of you amazing ladies and gentlemen. - jennyssMemberDear @TabooGal - best wishes from jennyss in Western NSW
- ShellSurfingMemberHi @taboogal, I went through the waiting not that long ago and the denial, and I am still in denial now, the amount of information that gets thrown at you is mind boggling.
I had my operation on the 2nd May 2018 to remove both my breasts and all my lymph nodes in one arm. I found out after the operation it had spread t more lymph nodes and my liver.
The operation for me went smoothly, the worst part for me was the drains, restriction of movement and as I had never had an operation before kind of freaked me out, thankfully my sister came home with me as I live alone.
As some others people mentioned, i found keeping a folder with all my results and having a pad and pen in there to write down questions very useful. Definitely take charge of your treatment and decisions - be informed.
I have listened to podcasts, BBC - The Big C, read books from the Library - The Cancer Whisperer is a great inspirational read and has some amazing thoughts in there on life and cancer in general - a thing from that book that stuck with me was one of her Doctors saying to her "Don't become a patient"
Hope it all goes well with you, I spent my Uni years down at Albury/Thurgoona, loved the Beechworth Bakery, it was my special trip if I did well at Uni lol
Sending you warm hugs, sunshine and light xxxxx - annsanMember@TabooGal I hope you are recovering well from your surgery. Years ago, I lived in Wangaratta but moved back to Queensland in 1984 where I feel I belong. I was diagnosed with BC in February so I am a relatively new girl to this site. After visiting here initially, it took me a couple of months before I could return. I am now so pleased that I did. If I can be of any help with Medicare or health fund claims, please let me know. Before being diagnosed with BC I worked as a Practice Manager for an Obstetrician/Gynaecologist/Fertility Specialist. I have worked in the medical field for about 25 years, so I am extremely familiar with lodging health care claims and dealing with the health care professionals. Please write down all of your questions before you see your Specialists. They are used to patients bringing in lists and it makes it easier for every-one. A lot of doctors don't respond to emails (either a time factor or they don't like "phone or email consults) so be prepared for a Secretary to sound reluctant. It is not her, she is following the Doctors' instructions. A lot of Doctors prefer that you make an appointment to discuss things face to face, by doing that you also know that they are concentrating on you when you are there. Just a few little hints that I thought you might find useful. Let me know if there is anything I can do. I am keen to find out the results of your surgery. Regards, Ann
- kmakmMemberThat's so lovely to hear Jenny! You clearly did a spectacular job raising them. Well done! Hope the drugs are good, that you get some sleep and food and that tomorrow is a better day. :* K xox
