Do you have any hobbies that involve other people? A sport, or singing/music group? Maybe let drop discreetly that you are looking to meet new people ... then at least you have a similar interest, to start off with - and current members may even know of someone who they think may suit you?
Sometimes a connection can 'happen' when you are least expecting it! In my own case, it related to a game of Squash! ;)
Do you have a Breast Care Nurse in your area? They may have some ideas, from clients who may've asked the same question?
Some social clubs (& pubs & the like) may have a 'speed dating' night - where 6 (or more) people are seated at a table with a chair ... and the other 6 (or more - usually of the opposite sex) have 5 mins with each person, then moves on to the next table, to see if there is a 'spark' or 'connection' ..... that way, all 12 get to meet up with a bunch of other people! It is out in the open & 'safety in numbers' .....
