Aaah....what I call the Cancer Colander. It tends to sift out the real friends from the rest. As mentioned by others, some just don't know what to say and so say nothing, others give the token "If there's anything I can do, just let me know"...yeah right...like you're going to say something like "Well actually, there is could you do X Y or Z for me"? Almost as good as the faux invite for dinner...you know the old..."You must pop round for dinner one night". Again knowing full well you won't be phoning up the following week and basically inviting yourself to dinner on Wednesday.
