Tamoxifen - to take or not to take?

I was diagnosed last November and my original biopsy showed that I was strongly oestrogen/progesterone positive. However, after surgery the pathology came back as strongly o/p negative. According to the oncologist, this isn't usual and she suspects the chemo may have gotten rid of the o/p positive cells.

My problem is, the oncologist is sitting firmly on the fence as to whether or not I should take tamoxifen. She can't say whether it will benefit me or if I'd be taking it for nothing. Considering the side effects that come with taking it, I'm not sure what to do. Has anyone else had something similar happen? What did you do??

Thanks!

  • Hello:) I'm not an expert, but I find it unusual that your oncologist doesn't have figures on what is your best option. There must be others who have had this happen. For what it's worth,I can only tell you, that I've been on Tamoxifen for 18 months now.The ONLY side effect for me that is annoying, are the hot flushes..However,they have eased a lot in the last 3 or 4 months, and some days now I don't have any.I have dry skin,a few leg cramps( managed with magnesium) and that's about it.I hope you manage to get a clearer picture of what is happening.Cheers Robyn xox
