Oncologist - Dr Eek
Well as it turns out we actually had the Oncologist appoinemt on Tuesday. Dr Eek's rooms called Mum to say he had a cancellation at 12.30pm & would she like it! Lucy & I went along to the appointment with her. Dr Eek was lovely. He had an excellent bedside manner & not only knew what he wazs talking about (obviously) but explained it in easy to understand terms. He provided stats on breast cancer and how each treatment will increase the percentage of the cancer not coming back to haunt us. He advised Mum that based on the size of the tumour and the stage that it was at, chemo would not be required. Instead he has suggested a course of radiation & hormone therepy (also known as endoctine therepay.) Hormone therepy is a common form of treament for people with ER+ hormone receptors on their breast cacner cells. The aim on ER+ hormone therepy is to slow or stop the growth of homone receptor positive cancer cells. Dr Eek drew diagrams of how the 2 most common hormone therepies will stop the receptor from "feeding" the cancer cells. At this stage it is predicted that Mum will have two years on a drug named Tamoxifen and then the following three years on Armoatase. After five years, a follow up appointment will be made & it will be decided whether she will continue the course for another five years. Dr Eek has also referred Mum for a bone density test, blood tests, CT & Bone scan. The bone density scan is related to Armoatase as a side effect may include osteoporosis. They need to determine whether Mums rickity ol' bones are up to it. We're all treating the CT & Bone scans as a bit of piece of mind - confirmation that there are no other nastys hanging around where they're not wanted. We have a follow up appoinment with Dr Eek on the 6th of August to discuss the results of all tests & when to start the hormone therapy. Future Appointments - Bone Density Test = 12/07/2013CT & Bone Scan = 17/07/2013 Next Stop... Radiation Oncologist Xx Catherine
